Depression treatment plan information
An ideal depression treatment plan includes options of psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, specialist counseling and antidepressant medication all combined. Humans are, however, distinctly individual and the right mix of therapies for one person may not suit another.
For example there are differences in autonomic lability or sensitivity, and differences between men and women based on genetic and hormonal factors.
Some individuals are constant thinkers while others are great doers. A treatment plan for the thinking type might include more cognitive behavioral therapy where thought patterns are considered modifiable. That is, where there is still some flexibility. Other patients might not be able to access or consciously modify their own thought patterns. There may be no cooperative access to thinking patterns and to the subjective, emotional life. Anxiety and fear may be the dominant resident emotions.
Antidepressant medications are given in most cases of clinical depression and where the depression is very deep and severe, electro-convulsive therapy is sometimes used to break patterns of acute or chronic psychotic depression. Where bi-polar disorder exists with serious mood swings, also known as manic-depressive psychosis, lithium is the preferred form of medication for a preventative approach to the mood swing disorder. Other common antidepressant medications include prozac and imipramine and the tri-cyclics, although side effects may be cause for concern.
