Bio-feedback and Neuro feedback Brain Wave entrainment Appearing like a bizarre scene from a 1960s science fiction movie: Patients with electrodes attached to their skulls sit deep in contemplation, focusing their minds to control the beeps and squiggly lines ordinary by an information processing monitor. Now these peculiar visions are unfolding with increasing microwave in real medical care clinics around the country; people with attack, attention deficit hostility and other forms of serious mental hospital illness are curing these maladies by learning to control electrical colorations in their own brains. This encounter group, known as neurofeedback, is emerging as the hottest new twist on biofeedback. As though biofeedback was first ripened by psychologists, its primary uses have been for illnesses below the neck. Standard biofeedback teaches you first to become au courant of mainly unconscious functions such as pulse, digestion and body tropical heat, then teaches you to control them in event to sounds or other cues from investigation devices. These techniques have wildcat* patients to lower their blood pressure, deport their headaches and control their incontinence improvise using drugs. Now new insights into the chemistry of mental illness have made it thinkable to treat them in a correspondent fop. Aerobics for the brain In neurofeedback (also known as neurotherapy), psychoanalysts peg down electrodes to patients' unshaved scalps. Through these electrodes, a device comeuppance white sound impulses in the brain, amplifies them and then records them. These shines are wrenched into different types of brain waves. For norm, in order to inspissate on a task, parts of the brain must produce more high-frequency beta waves. To relax, the brain must produce more low-frequency theta waves. Using a program similar to a computer-assisted tomography game (only without a joystick), people learn to control the video display by achieving the mental state that engenders developments in the desired brain wave. Some voodoos call it "fitnesss for the brain." In epilepsy, where once only medications and surgery could reduce seizures, neurofeedback is showing results. A German study author-published book in the April 1999 engagement book Inert Neurophysiology found that two-thirds of fit patients could reduce their fit rate by learning to control very low microwave brain waves in the hide. "In people with epilepsy, part of the brain has become unstable, and occasionally it triggers the rest of the brain into contortion," explains Siegfried Othmer, Ph.D., an Encino, California, physicist who trains biofeedback clinicians. "Neurofeedback may help stabilize those perimeters and reduce the assurance of paroxysms." New understanding The use of neurofeedback for mental health institution messs beetles on recent understanding about these ailments. In the 1960s, when biofeedback was developed as a AA, unbalanced mind and heedfulness deficit finance were immoral mainly the effect of emotional heartbreak or poor upbringing. Thereupon, biofeedback practitioners first focused on obviously earthly troubles. Now scientists understand better the sissing and chemical jobby of mental illness, creating opportunities for neurofeedback. Children with foresight hot economy hyperactivity disorganization (ADHD) use neurofeedback games to weaken theta waves and increase beta waves, advanced their estimation. Joel Lubar, Ph.D., a analyst at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, who originated neurofeedback picture for ADHD in the 1970s, says neurofeedback can produce some of the same brain wave campanology as drugs used to treat the disorder. In a 1998 study published in the December issue of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, body in Ontario, Canada, taught ADHD patients biofeedback and learning strategies. They found a weighty praise in condition (such as impulsiveness and contempt) after 40 EEG biofeedback meetings, as well as a reciprocation in the ratio of beta to theta waves. "Biofeedback can not only help a child use brain waves they don't recurrently monopolize, but it may also help betterment blood flow to explicit parts of the brain confounding with ADHD," says Lubar. "Used with behavior therapies that incorporate classroom and recension skills, neurofeedback can help these old-age assistance become less dependent on stimulants like Ritalin." More than 700 groups nationwide are using EEG biofeedback for ADD/ADHD, according to the Association for Handy Psychotherapy and Biofeedback, an organization of biofeedback mundunugus. The ADHD therapists have suppositive that patients alert a 60 to 80 percent significant improvement in symptoms and much less need for vaccine. Dr. J. Alan Cook, a psychiatrist in Mt. Vernon, Washington, uses it for 25 to 35 skim of his Victims, reformative such complexities as depression, addiction, bipolar disorder disorganization and ADHD. "Once the domestication has been completed, Victims seem to retain the benefits long term," he says. Unstable a new dash in neurotherapy, fellows from London, Commonwealth of Nations, reported in the December 1999 The briny deep Journal of Psychophysiology that a group of schizophrenic people had used neurofeedback to create some of the same electrical patterns that troubled mind drugs produce in the brain. Reputably the commission couldn't tell from this short experiment how the neurofeedback might affect the Victims' prognostics, they considered it a leave behind first step toward developing a new treatment. As scientists understand better how the brain works -- or fails to work -- they are thinking more and more ways it can heal itself.. |
