Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist, talks about depression. In this video he discusses the how psychology and psychiatry differ from their approach to depression. Is depression really a chemical imbalance in the brain or a psychological problem? Often time people are given antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin. SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often promoted as correcting chemical imbalances in the brain but there is no proof that depression or mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain nor is there any proof that antidepressants correct an imbalance. These medications often time have horrible side effects like agitation and sexual dysfunction. This is a different view of depression. In this video Dr. Breeding will discuss tips on how to recover from depression, become a more happy person. @sarlokkin ok :) I liked what you wroteI respect that. "I must act, before it's too late."good stuff..

@Jullyii And I'm not sure I'm very strong. I just have come to the point I can't hide anymore behind a scientific label. I must act, before it's too late.

@Jullyii I'm not saying depression isn't serious, it can and does ruin your life. When you are depressed the depression is not inside you, it's the relation you have with yourself and the world (others) around you. It's not inside your brain. When medicines erase depression the problem remains, the problem is hidden. When you are depressed you need to find the real problem, you need to get to the bottom of it. Depression is a label that clouds a whole structure of moral failing.

@sarlokkin ok. I think depression is a serious illness.. From my experience being depressed isn't "being really sad", I wish it was.. In my case it took over my life completly. And made them almost impossible to live.Like practically any other thing it's a very individual experience. My depression might be worse then yours. I might be not as strong as you are.BUT it's defiantly not an "invention" of modern societyNor a way to take money from people.

@Jullyii I just think that to turn 'depression' into a disease you make it worse.
sarlokkin (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@Jullyii I am diagnosed depressed a few years ago. And yes, I am not depressed ;) .

Depression is real. It can affect anyone in life. There is no evidence to suggest there is a chemical imbalance in the brain, however genetically, you are more likely to suffer from depression if your parents suffered ( this might be vage, but true). Robert Enke (German Goalkeeper) earned more in a week then what most people earn in a year - yet he commited suicide and was serverely depressed. Depression is a serious illness - I am still on that road. I hope everyone has a happy 2012

@munjerdo: ouch! That sounds pretty rough! See, i've never heard of anybody actually dying from marijuana. Of course, i assume like most smoke, it would afect the lungs and cause ephezema, but i must admit i HAVE heard of anxiety attacks in some ppl! I feel like they should legalize marijuana still. Some people like yourself may not be suitable for it, which is why they have clinics to decide wether or not you actually "need" marijuana.
