Dr. Niall McLaren, an Australian practicing psychiatrist for 22 years, explains what is wrong with the psychiatric profession: That it cannot/will not take criticism, for fear the entire model of biological psychiatry will unravel. That there is no science to psychiatric diagnoses, no brain based diseases. And that psychiatry only pushes mental disordersas biological disease in order to convince people to take psychiatric drugs, causing a host of dangerous side effects. For more psychiatrists/psychologists and doctors who have spoken out against the fraud of psychiatry's biological model of mental disorders(chemical imbalance, etc) click here http://3.ly/4kp

He is only saying there is no proof that mental illness can only be treated with meds because it's only a brain disease. This is pretty true as is the same for other "medical" problems. So often we don't know what causes medical problems such as cancer or inflammation but we'll treat that won't we?

Again, I'm simply against the idea that mental illness in general is a fraud made up by psychiatrists, as we sufferers ourselves would find that wrong. Anti-psychiatry involving criticism of DSM and the proposed definitions of mental illnesses, however, I am fine with, as I see it would help us mental illness sufferers more if their definitions are more correct and scientific.

@CCHRIntAs far as I can remember, Allen Frances was only against the revisions for the controversial DSM-V, that it needs an independent scientific review, among others. He was, however, not saying mental illness is a fraud in general -- which I find weird 'cause he was after all the chairman of the task force that created the current DSM-IV.

This hell lasted for a few more years until I finally went to see a doctor. Even then, though I am making progress through the help of the critical thinking-based drug-less therapy my doc gives me, I still experience hell every day. And to be completely honest, comments claiming mental illness is a fraud (in general) feels no different from someone (mis)judging me for my mental illness though as if he/she as walked into my shoes and experienced this hell him/herself. No offense.

But apart from that, mental illness is real. And this is not because some psychiatrist told me. But because my own life told me. Among my worst experience with it was when I was unaware of them. I once considered social anxiety as simply "shyness" and OCD as simply stress getting the best of me in high school. And these misconceptions almost destroyed me. I made 9 attempts on my life at that time, blaming myself for these "mistakes".

Damn. So many anti-psychiatry videos everywhere. I suffer from OCD and social anxiety for a long time now, and yes I've been to a psychiatrist. But he's so far from the psychiatrist you guys talk about. While he prefers therapy over use of drugs, he also often if not always give us a card of whose batch number we can use to call for free -- that's right, free -- Escitalopram pills. And this is every visit. I don't see how this is about controlling people so they could get their money.

They are smirking there heads off. In 5 minutes they will say you have chemical imbalance and it can only be treated with psychiatric drugs. yet not 1 piece of proof can be demonstrate this. So bogus for something they actually call a 'disease'. That would mean a pathology test requested by any doctor. Not one test. I assumed Autistic kids were not psychiatric druged. makes no sense. wrong. there treatment is anti psychotics + Prozac. A Psychotic Child! Fraud, they control fda, politicans.
